The incident that took place on May 10, 1859, was a seemingly minor one: A group of school and university students appeared at Athens’ Pedion tou Areos Park – the “Champs Elysee” of the Greek capital at the time – for the customary Sunday stroll, wearing cheap straw sun hats.
