Fr Dimitrios Giameos, a Greek Orthodox priest born on the island of Patmos, has died at the age of 79. His passing was announced on November 3, 2026.
For more than two decades, Fr Dimitrios did something few priests ever do. He got behind the wheel and drove to Greek Orthodox communities scattered across remote parts of New South Wales, Australia, making sure they had access to the sacraments, the liturgy, and a priest who knew their names.
These were communities far from city parishes, the kind of places where a Greek family could go years without a priest if one didn't come to them. Fr Dimitrios made the trip, again and again, for over 20 years.
He was 79 years old. He was from Patmos, the island in the Dodecanese where St John wrote the Book of Revelation. He spent a significant part of his life serving Greeks on the other side of the world.
