Greek police arrested eight people in a single day across the Evros, Rodopi, and Kavala regions yesterday, catching them in the act of transporting 32 undocumented migrants through northern Greece. The arrests came from six separate incidents spread across major highways and rural roads, pointing to an active smuggling network operating across the region.
The incidents unfolded across a wide stretch of territory. Two foreign nationals were stopped on the Ormeni-Ardanio national highway carrying two migrants, while another was caught on a rural Evros road with six people in tow. A fourth suspect was pulled over on the Didymoteicho-Alexandroupolis highway transporting nine migrants, and separate arrests in Rodopi's provincial roads netted four migrants per incident. The final arrest came on the Egnatia highway between Xanthi and Kavala, where one person was found transporting seven migrants.
All eight suspects are being referred to the relevant prosecutors. The preliminary investigation across the six cases is being handled by the Border Guard Departments of Soufli, Alexandroupolis, Kyprinos, Didymoteicho-Orestiada, Sapes in Rodopi, and the Kavala Migration Management Department, according to Skai.
The geographic spread of the arrests, from the Evros border zone all the way west to Kavala, shows migrants are being moved deep into Greek territory through multiple routes simultaneously.
