Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis put Turkey on notice Monday, saying that "the Greece of passive diplomatic stagnation belongs definitively to the past." Speaking on OPEN TV, he made clear that any attempt to violate Greek sovereign rights would be met with every option available to Athens. When asked directly whether Greece would respond if Turkey sent frigates into disputed waters, Gerapetritis did not hesitate. Greece has already demonstrated it can deploy frigates and F-16s, he said, and from next year onward it will also have F-35s in its arsenal. He also pointed to Rafale jets, upgraded F-16s, and the incoming Belharra-class frigates as proof that Greece's military buildup is real and continuing. On Turkey's so-called "maritime parks" in the eastern Mediterranean, Gerapetritis was blunt, calling them illegal and without legal validity. He described Greece's posture as fully prepared for any scenario, while still pursuing peace, but only from a position of strength and, as he put it, "without fear complexes." The remarks came alongside a separate report from Greek outlet Pro News outlining a scenario in which Israel could strike Turkish targets in northern Cyprus if Ankara's military presence there is seen as threatening Israeli interests. Targets mentioned in the scenario include Ercan Airport and a Turkish naval base near Kyrenia. The report offered no official confirmation that Israel has decided on any such action. On the Israel-Greece relationship, Gerapetritis dismissed concerns about overcommitment to Jerusalem, framing the partnership as part of a broader foreign policy that keeps channels open with the Arab world as well.
