Turkey is accelerating a sweeping infrastructure campaign across occupied Cyprus, combining large-scale development projects with direct political intervention ahead of elections in the north scheduled for December 6. Ankara's push serves two goals at once. It deepens the occupied territories' dependency on Turkey through energy and construction projects designed to eventually steer the north toward annexation, and it shores up the ruling coalition, the National Unity Party and its allies, against a polling deficit ahead of the December vote. Ankara prefers keeping figures like Ünal Üstel and Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu in power due to smoother communication with them, according to Philenews. The infrastructure projects are the most consequential part. Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that offshore technical work has already begun on a submarine pipeline intended to transport Eastern Mediterranean natural gas, potentially including Cypriot gas reserves, directly to Turkey. Electrical interconnection and a fiber optics network to turn the occupied territories into a so-called "digital island" are also underway. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz recently traveled to occupied Cyprus to inaugurate several projects, including a cold storage facility for Cypfruvex built with TIKA funding and a new Atatürk sports complex designed to UEFA Category 4 standards for 8,000 spectators. Port construction at Gastria and Karavostasi, Famagusta port modernization, road upgrades, and social housing targeting 15,000 units over five years are all in various stages of planning or construction. Turkey is also moving on the political and military fronts. Erdogan used his UN General Assembly address to call for international recognition of the secessionist entity in the north. Turkish Air Force exercises south of Cyprus and the annual "Seawolf" naval exercise have continued.
