Greece's parliament is spending 150,000 euros to rebuild and repair two homes on Kastellorizo, the country's most remote eastern island, so that doctors, nurses, and teachers posted there can live free of charge. The project is being developed in coordination with local municipal authorities following a meeting between parliament speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis and the mayor of Megisti. The housing shortage has long been one of the biggest obstacles to staffing health and education services on Greece's border islands. Kaklamanis said the parliament is delivering a concrete solution to a standing demand from the local community, and that the goal is to give public servants proper living conditions so they can serve residents without interruption. But the visit carried a sharper message as well. Kaklamanis used the trip to send a direct signal toward Turkey, citing what he described as ongoing provocations from the neighboring country. He said Kastellorizo is not simply the furthest eastern border of Greece, but of all of Europe, and that everyone needs to recognize that today. The parliament speaker visited military outposts alongside the prime minister and spoke with armed forces personnel and conscripts. They also traveled to the islets of Ro and Strongyli. At Ro, Kaklamanis laid a wreath at the monument of the Lady of Ro, the Greek woman who raised the flag on the islet daily until her death in 1982.
