A 26-year-old Afghan professional boxer has been arrested in Athens and charged with the murder of a 38-year-old British volunteer whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase in an abandoned parking lot in the Kypseli neighborhood. The victim, Elizabeth-Jane Ross from Edinburgh, had been volunteering regularly in Greece with organizations including One Heart. She arrived in Athens in late June and was last heard from during a phone call with a friend on the night of July 15. Shortly after, her family and friends began receiving text messages from her phone that didn't match her tone or style at all. The suspect, Sharif Ahmadzai, arrived in Greece as a refugee in 2016 at age 16 after fleeing Afghanistan, where he lost his father, mother, sister, and younger brother to Taliban violence and a suicide bombing. In Greece, he built a public image as a community activist supporting vulnerable groups, married an American citizen named Christian Alaina Hall, and had a child with her. The apartment on Rethymnou Street where Ross was staying belonged to the organization run by Ahmadzai and his wife, which is how the couple had access to the property. Security camera footage collected by Greece's Organized Crime Unit shows Ahmadzai walking calmly through Kypseli streets in the early hours of July 16, pulling a wheeled suitcase and carrying a blue backpack toward the abandoned lot. Around 13 minutes later, he appears leaving the same spot, without any luggage. The arrest was set in motion after Ahmadzai's wife alerted police. Using a live location-sharing app, she had noticed him at the victim's apartment. She then left with their child for safety and handed over a sum of cash and a mobile phone to authorities. Ahmadzai told police he found Ross already dead in the bathroom, but evidence shows he used her bank cards to make withdrawals and sent messages from her phone impersonating her. He now faces charges of premeditated murder, robbery, and illegal weapons possession.
