A lake beach in Germany has started turning away swimmers who cannot speak German well enough to understand safety announcements. Mathias Nobel, director of the company managing the beach, told the newspaper Bild that non-German-speaking visitors were repeatedly failing to follow lake rules and respond to loudspeaker instructions.
Nobel cited a specific incident from last Sunday where a child who could not swim was playing in the deep section of the lake, and the parents could not understand why staff were telling them to get the child out of the water. The lake is a former quarry site with a depth of 13 meters, making safety communication critical.
Nobel said people who are found to have a communication problem will now be turned away at the entrance. He rejected accusations of racism, insisting the policy is solely about safety compliance and ensuring visitors understand how to behave at the lake.
The manager has reportedly received messages accusing him of racial discrimination since the policy was announced. Nobel has pushed back on those claims repeatedly, framing the decision as a straightforward safety measure rather than a language or identity test.
