A British animal welfare charity is offering free accommodation on the Greek island of Syros to volunteers willing to care for the island's stray cat population. The program, run by Syros Cats, a UK-registered nonprofit operating on the Cycladic island, has drawn tens of thousands of applications, according to German outlet Baden24.
Syros is not Santorini or Mykonos. The island, sometimes called the "Island of Cats" for its large stray population, offers a quieter, more authentic Aegean experience, and that combination of free accommodation plus meaningful work has made the program a phenomenon among budget-conscious travelers in Europe.
The deal comes with real conditions though. Volunteers work mornings from 8am to around 1pm, handling feeding, cleaning, and general care of the cats, often in extreme heat and cramped conditions. The work is physically demanding, and the organization is upfront that applicants under 25 often lack the independence and initiative the program requires.
Free accommodation does not mean free everything. Accepted volunteers still cover their own food costs for the entire stay and must hold EU health insurance or purchase travel insurance separately. Applications must follow a strict format using a dedicated volunteer email address and a specific instruction sheet, and any inquiry submitted through the general contact form on the website will not receive a reply.
The 2026 application window has already closed. Anyone interested in volunteering for 2027 should follow the Syros Cats social media accounts, where the next application round will be announced, according to the organization's website.
