Greek police dismantled a transnational drug trafficking organization that was smuggling large quantities of cannabis from Albania to Turkey through Greece, authorities announced Saturday. The operation was carried out in the Thessaloniki area by officers from the Narcotics Sub-Directorate of the Organized Crime Directorate.
Two foreign nationals, aged 58 and 43, were arrested as members of the criminal organization. A third foreigner has been identified and is currently wanted by authorities.
The organization used international transport trucks loaded with recycled paper shipments as cover for the drugs. Members reportedly built specially designed hidden compartments inside the trucks to conceal the cannabis while keeping the vehicles' movements looking legitimate.
In total, police seized 324 kilograms and 474 grams of raw cannabis, a semi-trailer, two private cars, two mobile phones, a foreign license plate, 11 empty suitcases found near the seizure site, and 1,165 euros in cash. Authorities estimate the organization stood to profit more than 700,000 euros from its operations.
The group operated with a hierarchical structure and professional-level logistics, according to Greek police, suggesting it was a well-established trafficking network rather than a small-time operation.
