A wildfire that broke out Tuesday afternoon near Oreokastro, Thessaloniki, has killed at least two people, with firefighters discovering a second body believed to be that of a 12-year-old boy. The first body found was that of a man, believed to be the boy's father, recovered in a forest area near the village of Liti as the two attempted to flee the rapidly spreading fire. Authorities are awaiting formal identification of the second body to confirm it is the missing child.
The boy had been reported missing after his mother, a 40-year-old woman, alerted authorities that he was with his father when the fire overtook the area. She was transported to Hippokration Hospital in Thessaloniki with burns to her hands, thigh, and neck, but her condition is reported as stable and her life is not in danger. She is receiving treatment at the hospital's surgical clinic.
The fire broke out in the early afternoon and spread rapidly due to strong winds, pushing the fire front toward residential areas and prompting emergency 112 alerts for residents of Derveni and Liti to evacuate immediately. Residents of Liti were directed to move toward the local stadium.
Firefighting crews found both bodies inside a forested area near a structure close to the Liti settlement. A woman was also rescued from near the same property and handed over to EKAV paramedics. Greece's Unified Coordination and Crisis Management Center monitored the blaze in real time using drones equipped with both optical and thermal cameras throughout the operation.
