Israel's Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram called this week for a sweeping regional security alliance connecting India, the UAE, Greece, and Cyprus, arguing that Iran's military buildup has created the conditions for exactly that kind of coalition. Baram made the case at the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University, framing the proposed architecture as both a military and strategic economic front. Greece sits at the western anchor of this vision, and the timing is not accidental. Athens is currently seeking government approval for a roughly 3 billion euro air defense deal with Israel, according to Ekathimerini. The package reportedly includes Rafael's Spyder All-in-One and David's Sling systems, along with the Barak MX system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, collectively forming what Greek defense sources are calling an "Achilles' Shield" umbrella. Baram argued that the recent wars in Gaza and the Gulf have sharpened every regional actor's understanding of what Iran's military expansion actually costs. He said Israel's strengths in defense technology and operational experience, combined with Gulf financial power, could open a new security-economic front that benefits all parties involved. The proposal builds on a relationship between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus that has been deepening quietly for years, including joint military exercises, diplomatic meetings, and defense exports. Cyprus and Greece are considered the most natural defense partners in this framework, partly because both face their own strategic pressure from Turkey, which gives them an incentive to think seriously about collective defense arrangements that go beyond standard NATO and EU frameworks. The Abraham Accords countries, particularly the UAE, remain a more complex piece of the puzzle. Gulf states have tended to stay cautious about being drawn into direct military commitments, and the October 7 attacks added new friction. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has made clear that deeper normalization with Israel depends on progress with the Palestinians, a condition that currently appears far from met. #Greece #Israel #EasternMediterranean
