Greece's fire service fought 32 separate wildfires in a single 24-hour period on Saturday, June 27, with the country operating under a Category 4 extreme danger index and fierce winds pushing flames across multiple regions simultaneously. The most serious active blaze at the time of writing broke out around 5:30 p.m. in Kryoneria, in the Naupactia area of Aetolia-Acarnania, deep inside dense forest terrain. Fifty firefighters, 17 vehicles, 3 aircraft, and a helicopter were deployed, while an arson investigation unit traveled to the scene to determine the cause. Earlier in the day, a fire broke out just after 1:30 p.m. near the village of Petra in Boeotia. With the area already under Category 4 risk status, authorities sent an emergency 112 alert ordering residents to evacuate toward Livadeia. Forty-five firefighters, 13 vehicles, 6 aircraft, and a helicopter worked to contain it, and by evening the fire had no active front. At 4:00 p.m. a second dangerous front opened in Spatharis, Euboea, also classified as Category 4 risk. The response there was the largest of the day: 54 firefighters, 21 vehicles, 8 aircraft, and 3 helicopters were thrown into action. Neither homes nor critical infrastructure were threatened, and the fire was brought under control. A fire also broke out in olive groves at Skamia in the Vlacherna community of Arta. Two firefighting aircraft proved decisive in containing it quickly. A common thread across the Boeotia and Euboea fires was the use of drones equipped with optical and thermal cameras, which fed live imagery to the national crisis coordination center throughout the incidents. The real-time data allowed commanders to spot re-ignitions instantly and direct ground forces with precision. Arson investigation units from both Boeotia and Euboea are now examining the causes of all major fires. No casualties or structural losses were reported from any of the fires. #Greece #Wildfires #GreeceFire
