A British couple on their honeymoon were killed in a helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, along with their pilot. All three died when the private Bell 206 helicopter went down just metres from its landing pad.
The couple have been named as Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert. Cromie worked at asset management firm Blackstone, which confirmed his death in a statement, calling him "beloved by everyone who knew and worked with him." Ebert was a senior specialist at consulting firm Bain & Company, which also issued a statement expressing shock.
According to Kathimerini, the pair had taken the helicopter from the village of Markopoulo near Athens to the popular island. A senior police official told The Times the crash occurred just before the scheduled landing time of 6:15 p.m. local time.
Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis arrived at the scene shortly after and told local media there was almost "nothing left" of the aircraft. Locals described hearing a "bizarre engine noise" from the helicopter as it approached the landing pad. Two victims were found inside the wreckage, the third a short distance away.
Firefighters battled a blaze that broke out after the crash and extinguished the flames by Monday evening. The island's Vice Mayor for tourism, Yiannis Rafeletos, said the people of Sifnos are "devastated," adding that "so much happiness has turned into sorrow."
Greece's aviation safety authority confirmed to the BBC it is investigating and that investigators were heading to Sifnos on Tuesday to gather evidence and speak to witnesses. The UK Foreign Office said it is providing consular support to the families and is in contact with Greek authorities.
