Greece is asking the public to help name its first-ever astronaut mission, and the window to submit a suggestion is open right now.
Greek astronaut Adrianos Golemis, an ESA Project Astronaut and former space physician, is preparing for a planned two-week stay aboard the International Space Station. The mission will make him the first Greek national to travel to orbit, and the Hellenic Space Center wants the name behind that moment to come from the people.
Anyone can submit a proposal through the HSC's official website. Suggestions can be made in Greek or English, and the criteria are straightforward. The name should be short, easy to say in both languages, and ideally draw on elements of Greek culture, exploration, or scientific spirit. Mythology is welcome, but the symbolic meaning has to be recognizable beyond Greece's borders.
Golemis himself weighed in on what makes a good submission, saying the name should reflect Greek identity, the pursuit of research, and the spirit of cooperation that makes missions like this possible in the first place.
This is the kind of moment Greece hasn't had before. The mission is being organized through a commercial partnership between ESA, NASA, and US space company Vast, and it carries Greek-designed scientific experiments to be conducted in microgravity. The name will travel with it.
The Hellenic Space Center and Golemis will make the final call together, with the chosen name potentially adjusted to meet requirements set by ESA, Vast, and NASA.
Head to the HSC's official website to submit your idea before the deadline closes.
