Drunk-driving rate falls as alcohol checks in Athens surge 850%

A sharp increase in roadside alcohol checks in Athens appears to be deterring drunk driving, with the share of drivers testing over the legal limit falling to 0.8% in the first eight months of 2026 from 6.8% in the same period last year, according to police data.
