Two 42-year-old men have been charged with premeditated serial murder over the 2010 Marfin Bank fire that killed three employees, including a pregnant woman. The arrests came 16 years after one of the most shocking attacks in modern Greek history, sparked by a single anonymous email sent to organized crime investigators. The email named the two men, along with a third suspect, as the people who threw incendiary devices into the Stadiou Street branch during a mass demonstration on May 5, 2010. Prosecutors say new forensic evidence, including footage reportedly showing the suspects with uncovered faces that was then cross-referenced with material from the attack, placed them clearly at the scene. The two men were transferred to the former Evelpidon Court building under heavy armed escort and wearing bulletproof vests. They appeared before an examining magistrate and were granted a delay until Tuesday, July 14, to review the case file and prepare their statements. A third suspect, a 46-year-old woman who has lived permanently in the United Kingdom since 2020, faces the same serial murder charges. Greek authorities have already forwarded the arrest warrant to British police and are pursuing extradition proceedings to bring her before Greek justice. The defense attorney for the two arrested men, Anny Paparrousou, came out swinging, calling the process a politically motivated rush job timed to benefit the government's pre-election campaign. She said she was "almost certain" the case file "has no substance at all" and called the charges "a typical farce that will simply be dismissed."
