Turkish drones swarmed the Aegean on back-to-back days this week, with Greek military authorities recording a total of 37 separate incidents across October 18 and 19.
On October 18, five Turkish UAVs committed 10 violations of air traffic rules in the Athens FIR and 6 violations of Greek national airspace, according to Greece High Definition. The following day, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff confirmed that six Turkish drones carried out 9 violations of Greek national airspace and 9 FIR infringements, bringing the two-day total to 37 incidents. The activity was concentrated in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean. No armed aircraft were involved, and the drones were identified and intercepted following standard international procedures.
The spike in UAV activity came as Cyprus filed a formal complaint with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, documenting 626 violations of its airspace and 33 of its territorial waters by Turkish military assets in just June and July of this year. Cyprus said 203 of those violations involved Turkish drones including the TB2, ANKA, and AKSUNGUR models, while 360 were carried out by military aircraft, 192 of them F-16 fighters.
The Greek General Staff releases daily violation bulletins covering both FIR infringements and national airspace breaches separately. Turkey disputes the 10-nautical-mile airspace claim, arguing its aircraft operate in international airspace and are not bound by Greek flight plan requirements under international aviation law. Greece has maintained the 10-mile limit since a 1931 decree.
Cyprus's UN complaint adds diplomatic weight to what has become a near-daily pattern of Turkish military drone operations across the eastern Mediterranean.
