A fast-moving wildfire in the Kassandra peninsula of Halkidiki forced emergency evacuations on Friday, with flames ripping through pine forest and racing toward populated areas. The villages of Fourka and Siviri were both evacuated as authorities scrambled to get residents and visitors out of the fire's path. A bus rushed to a hotel in Fourka and carried the children to a safe location. Among those evacuated were a group of children from Ukraine who had been staying at the hotel. A local resident captured the evacuation on camera, showing the urgency of the situation as the fire closed in on the area. The fire front was described as moving rapidly toward residential zones, with pine forest fueling the blaze. Greek fire services were on the ground battling the flames as Kassandra, one of Halkidiki's three peninsulas and a heavily visited area in August, faced one of its most serious wildfire threats in recent memory.
