Greek MEP Nikos Anadiotis, a former actor elected to the European Parliament on the conservative NIKI party ticket, went on MEGA's "Kalimera" program and stated plainly that his Orthodox faith leads him to view homosexuality as a sin, drawing renewed attention to comments he has made on the topic before.
"My religion tells me that homosexuality is a sin, that is what I believe," Anadiotis said. He was careful to add that the same applies to any sexual act between heterosexuals outside of marriage, framing his position as one rooted in religious doctrine rather than targeted at one group specifically.
Anadiotis traced his political path back to the Athens rally against Greece's marriage equality bill, where NIKI leader Dimitris Natsios approached him. That encounter led directly to his candidacy and eventual election as an MEP.
He pushed back against labels like homophobic or racist, saying he has worked alongside gay people and offered an apology to anyone he has ever offended. He described himself as a sinner by his own measure, saying the greatest sin in his view is judging others, and that attending church is precisely because he is not a saint.
On the hypothetical of his own son identifying as gay, Anadiotis said he would stand by him while also explaining that the soul must be protected. He said homosexuality alone does not condemn a person, and that many sins can put the soul at risk. He described the Church as "the hospital of my soul."
