Saint Joseph the Hesychast is one of the most consequential figures in modern Orthodox Christianity, yet most people outside monastic circles have never heard his name. Born Frangiskos Kottis in Lefkes, Paros, he came from a modest background and spent his early years working in Piraeus before serving in the Greek navy. Around age 23, a deepening pull toward Christian asceticism drew him away from ordinary life entirely. He traveled to Mount Athos, took monastic vows in 1925, and received the name Joseph. Alongside a fellow ascetic named Father Arsenios, he settled in some of the most remote corners of the Holy Mountain, including the Skete of Saint Basil and the caves near Little Saint Anne. Their daily rhythm was built around prayer, fasting, all-night vigils, and absolute poverty. He devoted himself to hesychasm, the Orthodox tradition of inner stillness centered on the continuous repetition of the Jesus Prayer. Despite actively seeking seclusion, Joseph's reputation spread. Monks came from across the Athonite communities seeking his guidance, and the disciples he formed went on to transform monasteries across Greece and eventually North America. Elder Ephraim of Arizona, who founded or inspired more than a dozen Orthodox monasteries in the United States and Canada, was among those who traced their spiritual lineage directly back to Joseph. The recently enthroned Abbot of Saint Nektarios Monastery in New York, Archimandrite Stephanos, belongs to that same living tradition. Joseph died on August 15, 1959, on the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The Ecumenical Patriarchate formally recognized him as a saint in March 2020, 61 years after his death. Now a Greek television series is set to bring his story to a broader audience. Actor Aris Servetalis, who portrayed Saint Nektarios of Aegina in the 2021 film Man of God, is attached to play him. His influence moved from the caves of Athos to monasteries on three continents without him ever leaving the mountain. #SaintJosephTheHesychast #MountAthos #OrthodoxChristianity
