The 40-day memorial service for Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis was held Sunday at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia, the Athens neighborhood where he grew up. His parents, Klio and Manolis, and his sisters Maria and Vasso attended the emotional ceremony, which concluded with a memorial at his grave in Athens' Third Cemetery.
Mazonakis died on September 9 at 54 years old. Thousands had packed the same church for his funeral five days later, on September 14.
The judicial investigation into his death is continuing, and the toxicology results are now at the center of it. According to Mononews, tests found eight substances in the singer's blood, including propofol, a powerful anaesthetic used for sedation, midazolam, a sedative benzodiazepine, and flumazenil, which is used to reverse the effects of benzodiazepines. The combination has drawn serious attention from investigators.
A quantitative analysis to determine the concentration of each substance is considered critical to the case. A forensic expert appointed by the Mazonakis family is participating in that process alongside official investigators.
On Thursday, Security Police conducted a third search of the clinic on Karpathou Street, seizing two vials of pharmaceutical substances and two accompanying leaflets. The searches were carried out in the presence of two prosecutors and lawyers representing the two doctors accused in the case.
Authorities have made clear that the toxicology findings alone are not sufficient for a definitive conclusion. Klio Mazonaki, his mother, has spoken publicly about her grief and her determination to see justice done for her son.
