A 25-year-old Turkish man was shot dead in cold blood in the Exarchia neighborhood of Athens on Sunday night, with police finding five 9mm shell casings at the scene. The shooter, dressed in black with a cap pulled down to hide his face, ambushed the victim as he walked down a staircase with his pet. He opened fire from behind, with at least two of the five shots striking the victim in the head and killing him instantly.
The killer had been lying in wait at the location, according to investigators, and fled on foot into the narrow streets of the area immediately after the shooting. Greek police have launched a manhunt and are combing through CCTV footage from businesses and buildings in the surrounding area. Investigators reportedly already have critical footage tracking the suspect's movements before and after the attack.
The victim had been in Greece since November 2024 and had been brought in for questioning twice before, once in Volos and once in Athens. According to information gathered by homicide detectives, he had a heavy criminal file in Turkey covering drug offenses, fraud, robbery, and theft.
Investigators are working two main theories for the motive. The first is a drug-related settling of scores, and the second connects the killing to the ongoing war between rival Turkish criminal networks, a pattern that Greek authorities say has been documented repeatedly on Greek soil in recent years. Officials have not ruled out that the victim had fled Turkey seeking refuge in Greece, only to be tracked down by whoever was looking for him.
Homicide detectives from the Kataechaki headquarters are mapping the victim's contacts and recent movements as the manhunt continues.
