If Israeli land bases or ports were destroyed in a surprise attack, the Drakon, hidden at depth and invisible to enemies, could immediately launch a retaliatory strike carrying either conventional or nuclear warheads. The name Drakon, meaning Dragon, was chosen to honor the crew of the submarine Dakar, which sank decades ago. The letters D, K, and R from Dakar are embedded in the new vessel's name as a tribute.
