Russian cruise missiles struck a Turkish bulk carrier in the Black Sea on Sunday, killing five crew members and leaving five others unaccounted for. Eight survivors were pulled from the water and taken to a hospital in Odesa. Ukraine's Navy confirmed the ship was hit by three cruise missiles while it was moving away from the conflict zone, not toward it. The vessel was loaded with grain at the time of the strike. The crew was made up mostly of Syrian and Indian nationals. The Ukrainian captain was among those killed. Kyiv's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike in blunt terms, calling it a deliberate attack on an unarmed civilian vessel that posed no threat whatsoever. Ukraine officially labeled the strike a terrorist act and a serious violation of international humanitarian law. The attack came hours after Russia launched roughly 20 ballistic missiles at Kyiv overnight Saturday, killing one person and wounding 16 others. That strike followed deadly Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory the previous day. Russia has been systematically targeting Ukrainian ports, particularly around Odesa, throughout the war. This latest strike hit a foreign-flagged vessel navigating what Ukraine has designated as a civilian maritime corridor.
