Greek police have seized 50 untraceable handguns and 49 ammunition containers after stopping a Turkish cargo truck at the Evros border crossing, according to Kathimerini.
The operation used two trucks working in tandem. The first drove ahead to scout for police patrols, while the second carried the weapons hidden inside a travel bag and a suitcase stashed in the cabin. The guns had no serial numbers, making them nearly impossible to trace, the kind law enforcement calls "ghost guns."
Both drivers, Turkish nationals, were detained and are now under investigation for membership in a criminal organization and violations of Greek firearms laws. They are expected to be brought before a prosecutor.
Authorities believe the weapons were being smuggled from Turkey into Greece to supply criminal networks operating inside the country. The Evros land border has long been a pressure point for illegal crossings and contraband, but this seizure stands out for the scale and the coordinated two-truck method used to evade detection.
Greek police have not named the criminal organizations believed to be the intended recipients, but the investigation is ongoing.
