Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Amazon Senior Vice President Panos Panay at Maximos Mansion on Tuesday, with the two sides discussing a significant expansion of Amazon's footprint in Greece, including a major announcement about the Greek language.
Panay told Mitsotakis that Amazon's new AWS Local Zone in Athens will go live this July. The infrastructure will allow businesses and organizations in Greece to store and process data locally, meet data residency requirements, and run applications with very low latency, while also offering access to AI, computing, and networking services at high security standards.
A notable part of the meeting focused on the Greek language itself. Panay confirmed that Kindle and Alexa users will eventually be able to use Greek script and the Greek language in a way that reflects natural usage, without automated adaptations or workarounds.
The two also reviewed existing Amazon investments in Greece and explored new opportunities in areas the Greek government considers strategic. Discussions covered infrastructure tied to Amazon's Leo satellite internet service, investments in green energy, and the development of research centers and advanced technology units across the country.
Mitsotakis pointed to the quality of Greece's workforce and university system as key advantages for attracting tech investment, arguing they form the foundation for a strong startup ecosystem and for drawing research-driven companies to different parts of the country.
