A 75-year-old woman jumped from the first floor of her burning home in Kallithea, Athens, this afternoon after flames cut off every other escape route. The fire broke out just after 4:00 p.m. at a two-story house on the corner of Aristidou and Agion Panton streets, trapping her on the balcony as the windows shattered and the building was consumed by fire.
Her 80-year-old husband managed to escape through a rear garage exit, but the woman initially hesitated and then found herself with no way out. Bystanders gathered below, calling up to her, and a delivery driver who happened to be passing stopped immediately and rushed to help. Neighbors and passersby on the ground urged her to jump and then caught her as she came down.
Both were taken to hospital by ambulance. The man sustained a leg injury, and the woman was treated for respiratory problems. She is reported to be the owner of the property.
Twenty-four firefighters, seven vehicles, and a specialized aerial platform responded to the scene. The fire was brought under partial control, and Athens' Arson Investigation Unit has arrived to determine the cause.
