New Democracy party secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis drew a sharp line this week, vowing that Greece will not follow France and Italy into the street violence and destruction that has rattled European cities in recent years. Speaking on ERT, he made clear the government sees protecting social peace as a top priority.
Kyranakis pointed directly at what he called attempts by some actors to import those images of riots and property destruction into Greece, including through very young people. "We have won this social calm and social peace as Greece, and there is no way we will let our homeland become like the streets of Paris," he said.
On school occupations, Kyranakis called for continuous dialogue rather than confrontation, urging both government and students to sit at the table and genuinely listen to each other. He made the same appeal to university students.
He also highlighted concrete housing support for students, noting that two students sharing a flat can receive up to 5,000 euros combined, which he said in most provincial cities effectively covers the full rent. Dormitory renovations and new construction are also underway, he added.
On the electoral picture, Kyranakis pushed back against polling that puts New Democracy at 25%, saying the broader political climate justifies aiming for an outright parliamentary majority.
The comments come as governments across Europe have struggled to contain youth-driven unrest, with France in particular facing repeated waves of riots in recent years. Greece experienced its own era of severe political violence in the late 2000s, and New Democracy has consistently positioned itself as the party that restored order and stability.
