Serdar Denktaş, leader of the TAM Party in occupied northern Cyprus, grabbed a guitar at his party's Famagusta Solidarity Night and sang a provocative song threatening to plant the flag of the breakaway north across the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.
Adapting the Turkish folk song "Çırpınırdı Karadeniz" with lyrics tailored to Cyprus, Denktaş sang out "We will hang the glorious flag of Northern Cyprus in the south," drawing loud cheers from the crowd. Video of the performance spread across social media starting October 17, quickly drawing condemnation from Cypriot outlets who called it a direct provocation against the free areas of the Republic.
Serdar is the son of Rauf Denktaş, the founding leader of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Cypriot breakaway state that has occupied the northern third of Cyprus since Turkey's 1974 invasion. The clip stirred division even among Turkish social media users, with some praising the display while others questioned his credibility, pointing out he had recently marched alongside advocates of a federal reunification solution.
The incident highlights the deep tensions over Cyprus's future, as any prospect of reunification talks remains deadlocked and inflammatory rhetoric from figures tied to the occupied north continues to draw international attention. The Republic of Cyprus and the international community, with the exception of Turkey, do not recognize the self-declared state in the north.
