A 36-year-old man from Thessaloniki completed a 2,200-kilometer walk from Cologne, Germany to his home city on Sunday, June 14, finishing the journey in 77 days on foot. Known online as "Bulletproof Metamorpfosis," Akis crossed through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and North Macedonia before arriving to a crowd of family and supporters waiting for him in Thessaloniki.
The walk was a deliberate message against addiction. Akis has spoken openly about his own battle with addiction, and after coming through it, he set out to send a message of hope to others still in the fight. He described the journey as both a personal challenge and a symbolic act, saying that walking is one of the first things we learn to do in life, which gave the whole effort a deeper meaning for him.
He documented the trip on TikTok and the tracking app PolarSteps, building a community of followers along the way. Border police recognized him from TikTok when he crossed into Greece. Strangers stopped him throughout the route to wish him well and take photos.
One story from the road stood out. A German grandfather stopped him during the walk and asked where he was going. When Akis said Greece, the man told him his own grandfather had made the same journey during World War II, carrying a cannon.
Despite the exhaustion, Akis said Sunday night that this was only the beginning. He thanked his family and supporters and said his "metamorphosis" had only just started.
