Turkish violations of Greek national airspace have exploded in 2026, reaching 643 incidents in just nine months compared to 225 for all of 2025, a 185.7% increase. August alone recorded 214 violations, and the surge shows no sign of slowing.
The scale goes beyond airspace. Turkish aircraft entering the Athens Flight Information Region jumped 61.4%, from 366 to 591 in the same period. Violations of international ICAO air traffic rules hit 869 in nine months of 2026, already outpacing the 711 recorded across all of last year.
September was particularly aggressive. Greek authorities logged 217 air traffic rule violations, 151 Turkish aircraft operating in the Aegean, five armed formations, three aerial engagements, and two overflights of Greek territory. There were zero overflights recorded in all of 2025.
Drones are driving the latest wave. On October 21 alone, 17 airspace violations were recorded, 12 of them by UAVs. In the first 20 days of October, drones accounted for 77 of the 87 Turkish aircraft tracked, or 88.5% of total incursions.
Territorial waters violations are also climbing. Turkey recorded 2,705 maritime violations in nine months, already approaching the full-year 2025 total of 2,988. The monthly average has risen from 249 to 300.6, with August peaking at 453.
The Greek Air Force and Navy remain on alert. Greek fighters have identified and intercepted Turkish aircraft according to established procedures throughout the year.
