Katerina Kontochristopoulou made Greek fencing history at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy on Monday, winning the first-ever gold medal for Greece in fencing at the tournament. She claimed the top spot in the épée event with a 15-13 victory over Egypt's Amr Hosni Sara in the final. The athlete, who trains under coach Elli Tsolakidou, controlled the final from the opening exchange, building a lead early and never letting her Egyptian opponent close the gap completely. The win capped a dominant run through the bracket. To get there, Kontochristopoulou swept her pool stage without a loss, beating Sara 5-3, France's Constance Catarzi 5-1, and Tunisia's B'chir Nourane 5-4. She then defeated Croatia's Doria Blazic 15-13 in the round of 16.
