A senior SYRIZA figure publicly called for France-style riots to hit Greece, and the governing party is firing back hard.
Panos Lambrinidis-Stachtos, a former secretary of SYRIZA Youth who now holds a position within the Greek Police (ELAS), made the remarks on radio station NEO 103.3 on Monday morning, during coverage of Alexis Tsipras's visit to Volos. "Come on, Greece is next. It's our turn. We're close," he said, commenting on the mass demonstrations sweeping European countries.
Lambrinidis-Stachtos went further, predicting that November could be a month of intense street mobilizations, led primarily by students and high schoolers. He pointed to the housing crisis and the rising cost of living as the main pressure points driving young Greeks toward the streets.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis responded sharply, accusing those hoping for similar unrest in Greece of actively seeking to destabilize the country. "Don't fool yourselves. They want chaos, they pursue chaos, because that is the only environment in which they thrive," Georgiadis said. He added that the matter would be decided at the ballot box, not in the streets.
The exchange reflects a deepening political fault line in Greece, where economic pressures including soaring rents and inflation are feeding frustration among younger voters. Housing costs in Athens have surged over the past two years, pushing affordability out of reach for many students and young workers. SYRIZA under Tsipras has sought to channel that anger into a political comeback following its 2023 election defeat.
