Greek MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou took the floor at the European Parliament this week and delivered a pointed attack on Europe's political leadership, accusing them of abandoning ordinary citizens while violence spreads across the continent.
"Europe is burning," she said, citing France, Belgium, Italy and other countries as battlegrounds of chaos, looting, and destruction. She placed the blame squarely on radical Islamists, illegal migrants, and violent extremists, and accused left-wing political forces of shielding them from accountability.
Latinopoulou argued that the people absorbing the cost of this disorder are not politicians or elites, but working-class Europeans who have spent their lives building something and watch it reduced to ash in minutes. She described ordinary citizens as people who simply want to walk their streets without fear and see their homes, churches, and businesses protected.
Her sharpest criticism was directed at Europe's leadership itself. She said those responsible for the violence operate with the confidence that they will face no punishment, while the political class has proven unable to deliver on the most basic promise any government makes: keeping its citizens safe.
The speech drew significant attention, with subtitles in circulation carrying the line "We must throw Islam and its left-wing sponsors out of Europe," a phrase that sharpened the reaction both inside and outside the chamber.
Latinopoulou's remarks come as public frustration over civil unrest and migration policy continues to mount across multiple EU member states, and as far-right and nationalist voices in the European Parliament push for harder lines on both issues.
