Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis issued a sharp warning to Ankara on Sunday, invoking Greece's most defiant historical symbol at a memorial event in Piraeus marking 82 years since the liberation of Karpathos.
Speaking before the Association of Menetes Karpathians Everywhere, Gerapetritis declared that Greece would again say the historic "No" if provoked. "Our friends know this strength, and let those who plot against it remember it. Because if needed, then be certain that all of Hellenism will again say the big 'No'," he said, drawing a direct line between the wartime anniversary and today's tensions with Turkey.
The remarks came as seabed surveys for the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection resumed in the waters between Crete and Cyprus. The work is being carried out by the French vessel Abeille Marengo on behalf of French company Nexans, and Ankara has reacted strongly to the resumption. Athens has been firm that no third country's approval is needed for activity within its sovereign rights.
Gerapetritis also pushed back on any notion that Greece is negotiating from a position of weakness. "Greece today is at the peak of its power, with an economy that is strong again, a defence that has been shielded, a diplomacy at its strongest point ever, with the whole world respecting Greece," he said.
The message from the military was equally pointed. In an interview with To Vima, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Dimitrios Choupis outlined a new operational doctrine built around speed, mobility, and integrated air and missile defence across the country's full strategic depth, framing it as a direct response to lessons drawn from modern conflicts.
