Cyprus formally reported 659 violations by Turkish military aircraft and naval vessels to the United Nations, covering incidents recorded across just two months, June and July 2026. The report was delivered in a September 29 letter from Cyprus' UN Representative Maria Michail to Secretary-General António Guterres, and was circulated as an official UN General Assembly and Security Council document on October 2. Of the 659 total incidents, 626 were aviation violations and 33 were naval. The aircraft involved included Turkish F-16 fighter jets, Bayraktar TB-2, ANKA, AKINCI, and AKSUNGUR drones, and military helicopters. Of the aviation cases alone, 203 involved military drones and 192 involved armed fighter jets entering Cypriot airspace without clearance or any communication with the Nicosia Area Control Center. The 33 naval incidents involved Turkish frigates, missile boats, submarines, landing ships, and patrol vessels violating Cyprus' territorial waters. Turkey also made unauthorized use of the ports of Famagusta and Kyrenia, both officially declared closed by the Republic of Cyprus. Michail described the violations as not isolated events but part of a consistent pattern, writing that Turkish occupation forces continue on a daily basis to violate the military status quo while steadily expanding military infrastructure in occupied northern Cyprus. She warned that Turkey's actions directly undermine conditions needed to resume meaningful negotiations toward a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, and are contrary to the UN Charter and international law. Michail also noted that Turkish military activity continued beyond the June-July window documented in the letter, suggesting the pace of violations has not slowed. Cyprus said it remains committed to supporting UN efforts toward a just settlement that reunifies the island in accordance with Security Council resolutions. #Cyprus #Turkey #CyprusIssue
