Greek customs officers at the port of Thessaloniki seized 3,081 weapons this week after uncovering them inside a container shipped from China, officially declared as sunglasses and beads. The shipment was destined for a company in Bulgaria. Officers from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue flagged the container as suspicious and ran it through an X-ray scanner, which revealed the hidden cargo. A physical inspection found 24 cartons packed with weapons. The haul included 1,900 daggers, 595 swords of various lengths, 470 butterfly knives, 110 knuckle-dusters, and six curved karambit knives. All items were confiscated with the approval of a prosecutor under Greece's weapons legislation. The false declaration on shipping documents, listing ordinary retail goods, is a common tactic used to smuggle prohibited items across borders undetected. The Thessaloniki port is one of the busiest entry points into southeastern Europe, making it a frequent target for smuggling operations moving goods from Asia into EU territory and beyond. No arrests have been announced as of Thursday, but the case has been referred to prosecutors. The Bulgarian company named as the recipient is now under investigation. #Greece #Smuggling #Thessaloniki
