Greece's Communist Party (KKE) is demanding that Defense Minister Nikos Dendias cancel a newly signed memorandum of cooperation between the Greek Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard, calling the agreement dangerous and anti-democratic.
The deal was signed during the sixth round of the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue in Athens on October 7, which also coincided with Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to the Greek capital. KKE MPs Nikos Papanastasis, Vasilis Metaxas, and Thanasis Pafilis submitted a formal parliamentary question challenging the agreement.
The KKE argues that the Florida National Guard has faced repeated allegations of misconduct in the United States, specifically citing documented abuses of authority, cover-ups involving the mistreatment of migrants, and the Guard's use in operations targeting refugees along the US-Mexico border. The party warns that transferring those practices and doctrines to Greek military officers would amount to preparing the Armed Forces to suppress domestic protests and social movements.
The Greek government has framed the memorandum as an upgrade of operational capabilities and an exchange of expertise, particularly around civil protection and disaster response. The KKE flatly rejects that framing, describing it as calculated and misleading.
The party also drew a line of responsibility across multiple administrations, stating that the current New Democracy government is continuing a path previously paved by SYRIZA and PASOK governments through the expansion of US and NATO bases in Greece.
The Defense Ministry has not publicly responded to the parliamentary question at the time of this post.
