Kimberly Guilfoyle has resigned as U.S. Ambassador to Greece after the White House asked her to step down Tuesday, following a wave of misconduct allegations she flatly denies.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the move at her first media briefing, saying the administration had asked Guilfoyle to leave her post. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well," Zacharia said. Trump told reporters he had not spoken to Guilfoyle directly, but said of her tenure, "we didn't like what we were reading."
Guilfoyle posted her resignation on X, calling the ambassadorship "the honor of a lifetime." She thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the appointment and said her commitment to the America First movement would continue beyond her diplomatic role.
The allegations against her are serious. The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle told guests at a reception that the U.S. could undermine the Greek government if it chose to, promoted the interests of a specific Greek construction and energy company, and allowed that company's lobbyist into private diplomatic meetings. A Trump donor named Eric Deters also came forward claiming she asked him to wire $100,000 directly to her American Express account days before her Senate confirmation hearing, in exchange for access to senior administration officials. A text message he provided appeared to show Guilfoyle telling him to wire the money because "it won't show up anywhere" that way. Deters says he did not pay.
Guilfoyle's attorneys say the money was owed for speaking engagements and deny any impropriety related to her travel. The State Department's inspector general office is looking into the allegations, though it remains unclear whether a full formal investigation has been launched.
Greek opposition parties had called on Athens to summon Guilfoyle over the scandal. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis pushed back, saying she had been treated like any other ambassador and that a formal summons was unnecessary.
