A 72-year-old woman has died after a coordinated arson attack targeting New Democracy politicians in Thessaloniki in the early hours of Wednesday, marking one of the most serious acts of political violence in Greece in recent years. Vagia Nestora died from burns covering roughly 80% of her body and multiple organ failure, according to hospital officials. She was at the apartment building of her daughter, Afroditi Nestora, a New Democracy party candidate, when an improvised incendiary device was detonated outside. Her daughter remains in hospital with burns and smoke inhalation injuries. Three separate attacks were carried out within minutes of each other starting at around 4:18 a.m. Police believe the same perpetrators traveled by motorcycle and planted the devices in rapid succession. Two other attacks targeted the homes of New Democracy's Thessaloniki committee chairman Zisis Ioakeimovitis and former MP Savvas Anastasiadis, with no injuries reported in those incidents. Greece's Counter-Terrorism Service has taken over the investigation. No group has claimed responsibility and no arrests have been made, according to authorities. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the death exposed the "murderous and inhumane nature" of political violence, calling on Greeks to unite and push terrorism to the margins. He had earlier described those behind such attacks as "nothing more than criminals" who would be treated accordingly. Opposition leader Nikos Androulakis demanded those responsible be "arrested, brought to justice and punished," adding that a democratic society governed by rule of law cannot tolerate criminal acts. Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also condemned the attack, calling terrorism incompatible with democracy. #Greece #Thessaloniki #PoliticalViolence
